6 Different Types Of Printed Circuit Boards
printed circuit boardA printed circuit board, which is commonly referred to by the acronym PCB, is a reticular electrical component used in a large range of devices. While many people are most commonly familiar with a double sided PCB, there are actually numerous types of boards used in the modern world, most of which can fit into 6 categories: rigid-flex, rigid, flex, single sided, double sided, and multilayered.

Single Sided PCB’s

The single sided PCB is the least used type of board, as it does not offer a vast amount of complex designs. It consist of electronic components that are applied to a single surface and are ideal for typical electronic devices. Single sided PCB’s are ideal for anyone who plans to mass-produce their specific design, as it is the most cost-efficient option.

Double Sided PCB’s

printed circuit boardThe double sided PCB is lot more popular than the single sided PCB. This is because the board can deliver more functionality and generally weighs less and works faster than other models. To connect to circuits, the double sided PCB either uses a through-hole or surface mount technology. The main differences being that the through-hole options utilizes wires while the surface mount uses leads to generate circuits instead.

Multilayer PCB’s

Using a multilayered PCB usually means that the complexity of the model is going to be enhanced. This type of PCB is ideal for people who need to create dense designs with many different layers and functions. These multiple layers help diminish electromagnetic interference and supply sufficient power to their circuits.

Rigid PCB’s

printed circuit boardA rigid PCB is going to have various layers and sides. A rigid PCB is used in situations where the printed circuit board cannot be bent whatsoever. Its rigidness is obtained by using a solid substrate material that resembles fibreglass.

Flex PCB’s

A Flex PCB has a lot of advantages. For starters it can be used to restore the bulky wiring found in satellites, and is highly flexible, making it ideal for more complex and space-sensitive designs. The Flex PCB comes in a variation of formats: single sided, double-sided, and multilayered.

Rigid-Flex PCB’s

printed circuit boardThe rigid-flex PCB is the product or merging both rigid and flex PCB models. This type of PCB has rigid and flexible parts to it, making them one of the more complicated and expensive PCB models.

Not everyone is familiar with the different types of PCB’s available on the market, however, there are many PCB manufacturers who can suggest which models their customers are in need of. There is a lot to know about PCB’s which is why consulting a professional prior to requesting a model is ideal for first-time users.
